PS Raymond Omollo Calls for Collective Efforts to Combat Illicit Arms in Kenya
Principal Secretary Ministry of Interior, Raymond Omollo, has emphasized the importance of enhancing collective efforts to tackle the widespread issue of illicit arms in Kenya. Speaking in Radisson Blu Upper hill, Nairobi, PS Omollo outlined the government's commitment to reducing the accessibility and availability of illegal weapons, which have long fueled violence and instability across the nation.
"Kenya believes that by enhancing our collective efforts, we can make substantial progress in reducing the accessibility and availability of illicit arms and curbing their devastating impact on our societies," stated PS Omollo. His remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the Kenyan government to strengthen regional cooperation and strengthen internal measures to combat the proliferation of illegal arms.
The Principal Secretary highlighted several key initiatives aimed at addressing the issue. These include increased cross-border collaboration with neighboring countries, the implementation of advanced tracking and monitoring technologies, and the expansion of community-based programs designed to educate and empower local populations to resist the lure of armed groups.
“We must continue to enhance border controls, strengthen our legal frameworks and promote responsible small arms and light weapons transfers,” PS Raymond Omollo asserted. A collaborative approach has already shown promising results, with recent operations leading to the seizure of substantial quantities of illegal firearms and the dismantling of several arms trafficking networks.
Moreover, PS Omollo stressed the importance of public awareness and engagement. "We cannot do this alone," he said. "It requires the participation of all Kenyans. We urge citizens to report suspicious activities and support initiatives aimed at creating safer communities."
The government's efforts also focus on providing economic alternatives to those at risk of being drawn into illegal activities. Programs that offer vocational training, educational opportunities, and financial support are being expanded to ensure that vulnerable groups, particularly the youth, have viable paths to legitimate livelihoods.
PS Omollo's call to action has been met with support from various sectors, including civil society organizations, security agencies, and international partners. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has pledged additional support to Kenya's initiatives, recognizing the country's pivotal role in the regional fight against illicit arms.
