Wear Kenya - Build Kenya! Edukans Calls on Kenyans During 'Wear The Green Future' Launch

Edukans Kenya has officially launched the ‘Wear The Green Future’ initiative in Nairobi that aims to create a sustainable future by transforming the fashion and textile sector. This will mainly focus on equipping young people with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainability and entrepreneurship, consequently providing job opportunities for the youth and growing the Kenyan economy.

Speaking to the press after the event, Mary Mugo, Country Director Edukans in Kenya, lauded the efforts of EduKans. “It's more about greening our environment but from the aspect of circularity and sustainability in the textile sector,” Mary Mugo noted. She also expressed Edukans readiness and willingness in bringing young people on board, and especially those struggling with drug and substance abuse. This will not only save them from that menace, but also provide them with an opportunity to grow their careers in the fashion industry.

Moreover, Mary Mugo noted that Edukans would not only train and mentor these youth, they would also offer linkages for them with prospective employers. By her account, the future of fashion must be green and Edukans believe that young people are the key to driving change. “We welcome the young people to have a conversation. We have the youth at heart. Come let's help you to recover; let's help you to identify the potential that you have and how you can fit into the society and become more fruitful and productive,” she assured.

The event held at Safari Park hotel brought together various stakeholders from academia, MSMEs, government and civil service, to discuss and witness the launch of this far reaching program. “Wear The Green Future” launch encompassed a number of panel discussions and a keynote speech by the Secretary Ministry of Industry, Professor Erastus Gatebe, who was representing the Principal Secretary.

Prof. Gatebe expressed the ministry's commitment to supporting Edukans mission, noting similar governmental initiatives already ongoing that target the youth across the 47 counties. The professor also challenged attendees to uphold the culture of wearing Kenyan made apparel. “We should ensure we buy Kenya, build Kenya. Our former president really promoted this ideology and especially amongst government workers,” he reminisced.

Through the Wear The Green Future program, Edukans will empower young people through green education to help lead a sustainable and circular fashion future, by partnering with the private sector, Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutes (TVET's), the government, knowledge partners and young innovators. Through the program, 4,600 young people will work alongside companies to reduce waste, water pollution, and CO2 emissions, develop green entrepreneurial skills, and help create a future-proof and sustainable fashion and textile- industry.

Some of the key aspects of the initiative include and are not limited to:
Innovative Education
Developing a green curriculum for vocational education that includes practical skills in sustainability, eco-design, and circular economy principles.

Practical Experience
Providing hands-on experience through internships and projects with companies in the fashion and textile industry.

Youth Empowerment
Training young people to become future entrepreneurs and skilled workers who can drive the transition to a greener industry.

Collaboration
Working with educational institutions, businesses, and other partners to create a comprehensive and impactful program.
